I would highly reccommend not soaking them for more than 5-10 min max. If you let them soak too long the cane will swell and they'll become really mushy and extremely open. What I do is I carry a film canister in my bag, I only soak them for a few minutes and then I put them in my mouth to get them used to the temperature of my mouth. It really does make a difference. If the reed gets too closed try gently pressing the sides together to open it. If this is a really big problem, try tying the reeds at a shorter length maybe 72-73.
