i've not tried the prolonged soaking, but what i do is leave my reed cases in a 'salt box'. using about a cup of rock salt (like you'd use for homemade ice cream) and then putting it in the toe end of a stocking (pantyhose, etc) and then tying up the little ball and cutting the excess, i then run some tap water over this to wet it through. then shake out the excess and put in an airtight container (a tupperware container big enough to hold the salt ball at the bottom and your reeds in plastic reed cases). the humid atmosphere in the box keeps the reeds in a constant environment and i find that the salt seems to stabilize the reeds. on a side note, i would not recommend the use of leather cases as leather will start to corrode. there should not be any extra water running around the bottom of the box, and you should feel it periodically to make sure it is moist enough. i have tied reeds on and let them dry out in the air, then put the blanks in the salt box and within a week or so, they are stabilized to the point where i could scrape a new reeds and play a concert on it without it changing the next day. i also am a fan of the hot water method. using a little electric kettle to heat water, it soaks cane faster for tying, and soaks reeds to play in about 10 seconds, very nice.... but not always practical if there is not an outlet handy. just some thoughts, hope they help.

chris
