Here's an answer. Try it and see. Reeds play fine if they are soaked for long periods of time.....2days 2 weeks or 2 months. It keeps the inside of the reed cleaner....ie sediment doesn't stick to the inside of the reed.. The water will have to be changed from time to time. You can add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to keep things hygenic. As far as making the reeds too open....they only open up so much and then stabilize....if stability, constancy is what you are after, long soaking is great. The constant soaking and drying process with oboe reeds puts the reed through continual shrinking and expanding. This soaking approach avoids this change. Take a practice reed at home and try this constant soaking......if the reed is too open at first just squeeze it down to size . Good luck I used constant soaking for a period of about 6 months. It was fine but was too much work....especially if you have to transport tupperware containers with reeds in them. I used individual la voz reed holders to protect them during transport...the holders were right in the water.
As noted by other oboists a minute or two of soaking is all most people do. John
