Hello Alphons,
I am VERY grateful to Chris for all the insight he gives on this list. His descriptions of the work he does are informative and insightful. It is rare to find someone who has both technical skill and expertise, and the ability to write about it in a clear and structured manner. Please do NOT discourage him!
From my perspective, Alphons, his descriptions show me how much I have to learn, and why I should never, ever attempt replacing a tenon cork on my Loree by myself. On the other hand, if I get a Bundy in a sad state of disrepair, I may well try it and learn from the experience. Each case according to its merits.
I find that understanding the mechanics of my instrument from every aspect helps me play better, and has sometimes got me (and others) out of very tight corners.
