Gary,
I only got interested in the oboe a few months but have played the clarinet for years. The hardness of the reed affects the sound control in the same way. Soft reeds are great for beginners - and when you're feeling tired, but a harder reed gives better control of the sound - particularly in the upper register. Of course, with the clarinet, there's the mouthpiece to consider as well, and a hard reed can be made easier to blow by using an appropriate MP. Guess that's a big advantage!
As for the guitar, I only chose it because it was all I could afford when I was a teenager. My parents were totally unmusical and never allowed me to learn anything. So as soon as I got a holiday job, I bought a cheap classical guitar, taught myself to read music and it kind of snowballed from there. I had nothing to compare it with at the time, but looking back, I realise now that it's quite a difficult instrument to learn.
Enjoy your oboe! If you like it, you might want to add to the reviews on their website and also on other forums.
