Hi all,

my first post in this forum ... hope not to do errors.
I've recently purchased on Ebay a Barrington model 801 . IMHO nobody should buy this brand of oboe on Internet .
I try to explain: the sound is good, perhaps great even if I never had at hand a Loree or Rigoutat to compare with.

I had the chance to compare and do blind tests betwee my Barrington and a Selmer 123F ( plastic ) and a Orsi ( wood ) .

The result was Barrington sounds better than wooden Orsi and equal to Selmer .
In addition it speaks easy ( that is good pads ) .

The problem is the mechanics of the instrument : the keys stuff is very poor and some keys and pads are mounted in such a way that they works for a pure miracle. For instance on my instrument the F# key is mounted completely misplaced so that the pad can cover the hole just for a fraction of a millimeter, there are some links soldered out of place... and so on .

When the instrument arrived it was completely unplayable :
I had to work for several hours during a couple of weeks to file several axles because there was not enough clearance ( ! ) then the associated keys were badly stucked.

Now it sounds well and I'm happy with it, but just because I was able to do extensive repairing work.

Perhaps I was unlucky with my horn but I noticed in pictures of other Barringtons that the C link is soldered too low ( the same defect has mine ). Anyway the mechanics are not precisely cut and they are weak .

Resuming :
buy it only if possible to do a try before buying because it can be a great instrument or a nigthmare depending on the quality control of the day for the particular chinese o taiwanese firm that relly built it .

My two cents.

Stefano
