It's great that you are interested in playing the oboe. I would reccommend an oboe through company's that you can try them out on or rent for awhile before you purchase one. So many people think the oboe would be great to play so they buy one and then realize they absolutely hate it. Also, an oboe on ebay or through some place that your not able to play it would be cautioned. There may be problems with it such as leaky pads, corks, bad adjustments or if it is a wood oboe, it may have been cracked or has one. Cracks are very hard to see because of the grain but they are definent problems. I know two girls from my university who are wanting to sell there oboes. They are good brands and are almost new. I can get more info if you would like. When I purchased my oboe I bought mine through midwest musical imports. There a good company and have a program where they will send you as many oboes as you would like to try until you find the right one for you. The only cost is shipping. Another good company is Mark Chudnow. I believe these places both have websites so check them out. If you purchase your oboe through a company you will have "coverage" in case something should happen while it is being shipped or afterwards. Warranties are nice, especially if it should crack.
