The Oboe BBoard

I picked up Loree, Platz, and Lesher oboes from Ebay. All were lauded as wonderful instruments, but all needed serious work done and were incapable to playing in the state they were shipped to me. I took the oboes to a few general instrument repair places in the Los Angeles area and these repair people cannot play an oboe to tell whether they've properly adjusted them (apparently!).
Thankfully I can do adjustments myself, but a casual player or someone who is just interested in learning really needs to beware of Ebay as one cannot just take an oboe to anyone and expect to get it back in playable condition like you can other instruments.
I suppose a seller with a decent return policy would be good, but I've purchased many other instruments off ebay too and they are not generally in the best of conditions... which is probably why they're being offloaded on ebay.
You can get a really good deal on a brand name oboe... but it may not necessarily be in the condition you expect is the problem.
Regards,
Stephen
