OK, apparently I've got the same Minuet in Gekeler 2, so i'm reading it as dotted half = 76, meaning 1 bar = 1 pulse at 76 pulses per minute (or putting it another way, play 76 bars in a minute, which is an average heart-beat rate) so i reckon a conductor would be doing this 3/4 time leisurely "in one" as other post already mentioned
Agree with dutchy, it definitely seems like a lively allegro melody for the musician's fingers, fitting in 3 quarter-notes per beat/bar (not a single leisurely dotted half anywhere for the musician in this piece)
later on in second strain, fingering is up to presto speed, playing 6 eighth-note bar runs for several bars continuously -- even if the minuet dancers are still gliding & swishing along sedately at heart-beat rate of one step per dotted half each bar
what with all the repeats and DC al fine (no repeats) this piece needs to be blown for a total of 240 bars, and (breath) rests are only one quarter note value each scattered sparsely throughout the piece, needs excellent breath management to stay on top of this one -- it would take just over 3 minutes to play the whole thing at 76
The Turns (grupetto) don't have sharps or flats indicated with them, so all the Turn notes played are those in the key signature only, and i'm thinking it's a very simple basic turn of D GFEF B ?
Isn't that sweet, the Turn cancels the forked F fingering (or Left F) used for D-F interval which we'd normally have to do if we played it straight without the Turn in it, heh-heh-heh
Don't understand the C# comment at all, haven't got any Turns marked in Gekeler where C# would be played ... ? Only have two D-F-B Turns marked in Gekeler, are there more Turns elsewhere in Barret's edition?
Dotted half in 3/4 time = one complete bar
one half note = 2/3 of the bar, need a quarter note or quarter rest to add up the bar's math correctly
If this piece was marked quarter note (black note with stem, no tail) = 76, it would play out like an adagio, but sound yawningly tedious ...
