I'm working out of the Gekeler Book Two, which has a selection of Barret, but with only a modicum of instructions; I suppose he assumed that one would have a teacher to Explain It All. Anyway, upon checking the original, I see that it is indeed covered, although it is indeed confusing. I supposed Barret assumed, too, that one would have an instructor nearby to Explain It All.
