"mid-fife crisis"
Good one, Stephen. You play the flute, right?
I take it you are in a community band? Me, too.
The scenario that you played out on another thread, regarding what would happen if another oboist showed up, expecting to play the solos, actually happened in our band.
Last year, another oboist came in and grabbed the first folder (which had been mine), then apologized, saying she didn't mean to be presumptuous. We shared solos. This year, she just took the first folder, and has not made any noise about sharing, etc.
She definitely has more experience than I do, as an oboist -- majored in oboe performance, although didn't finish the degree. She reads very well, but as far as tone quality and intonation, I would say that most of the time I have the edge on her. (Not just my opinion.) I'm also better on the swing stuff, which we play a lot of. Most of the time, we play well together, but every now and then, I would love to have a crack at the show-off seat. I agree with you, that opportunity is part of what we play the oboe for.
On balance, since I have an English Horn and she doesn't, it has worked out that I have actually played more solos than she has. Everybody LOVES the English horn.
But, my main interest is just to get to be a better player and to support the band, and if that means swallowing my ambition and biding my time, so be it.
