Thanks for your posts and comments! I assure you the plastic reed has been taken out of his case. I never liked the sound anyhow. I do have a drawer for him to put reeds into; the ones that don't work, the ones that are too narrow, the ones that that you can see a small crack down the side (before you soak them) and any others that he has rejected without trying them. I won't throw any away unless they are broken. One day he will appreciate his collection.

I am narrowing my choices for ordering new reeds. I like Fox, Good tone Guild and another member offered to send sample reeds. I'm feeling like there is hope that we will get this under control.

The instructor that he had was hired by the school to help the new oboeists. I thougt this was very nice of the school. This was only a 4 day contract however. I can still hire him privately but I'm not convinced that the student/teacher pair is a good match. My son is a sponge and will take on other peoples preferences and idiosyncrasies as the Golden Rule. Hense the reed problem. If his instructor would have told him that playable reeds are not too difficult to find; we wouldn't be in this situation. Other than the reed problem the instructor seemed to be very adequate.

My son takes very good care of all of his instruments and stuff that goes with them. He only broke one clarinet reed in his life (and came home crying about it), all others were just played/warn out. He would not even conceive of putting a loose reed in his case.

Again, Thank You all for your words of wisdom. I'll keep reading this board along with the clarinet board.
