... i think as far as general musicianship is concerned band teachers / directors are a wealth of good information, but what i fancy dutchy means is they don't necessarily know how that translates specifically to oboe technical skills
... the first technical thing i would mention that is specifically and very importantly different for oboe is the breath mark | ' | in music
while everybody else is following natural instinct to inhale first, because usually they've blown out a lot of air to play their instruments, oboe players are training themselves to exhale first, because oboe players have to hold their breath, building up stale air, to play this instrument
As for reeds, smart oboe students are ahead of their band director, they walk into the band room with reeds already soaking in their trusty little reed-soaker ... by the time they've set up music and put instrument together, reeds are ready to play
With this scenario in mind, i recommend reed soakers narrow enough to hold the reeds upright on a moderately steep diagonal, easy enough to get two fingers in to grasp the cork end, and deep enough to put leak-proof caps on without touching the reeds in any way. Such a container is spill proof and scatter proof, a definite plus for any oboe student coming into a busy band-room at block changes.
Also, such a container can hold a small amount of water and go anywhere in a gig bag, or a pocket, so there's no excuse at band festivals ... the oboe student always has reed-soaking water with them (and it had better be *today's* clean fresh water)
