i'd never give up the oboe for the clarinet, but two points of envy:
"more interesting repertoire" - i dunno, it's really tough to compete with the mozart clarinet concerto and mozart and brahms quintets! that's about as close to ecstatic non-symphonic music as i can think of. when i listen to those, i want to play the clarinet badly. then again, we do have a lot of cool baroque that was thankfully composed before the clarinet came along and blew the oboe out of the water (slight exaggeration). 20th century oboe stuff: A- .
"easier to play" - maybe, never tried it.......but i do know it would be nice to be able to pull a reed out of a box, make a couple of refining scrapes if you're picky, and play! color me as a big skeptic on clarinet being harder than oboe!
