Carrie, if you were happy with the instructor except for "the reed problem", I would hire him/her right away! Especially if said instructor will sell you reeds (that are good) - reeds ARE probably the biggest problem of beginning oboists, so they weren't exaggerating.
Beginning oboe players need a teacher much more than say a beginning flute player (although I recommend teachers to all who can afford it). Usually band directors have some expertise in the more common instruments but the oboe (and bassoon) are mysterious, depending on where they got their degree, they may not have ever played an oboe! It does sound like you have a good program though, if they hired a pro to get the beginners started.
There are many threads about the benefits of taking lessons, but finding a good teacher is really important - not every student/teacher pairing is a perfect match! Most teachers will be happy to do a few trial lessons, although it sounds like you have had with this teacher. Good luck!
