Bobo
you're right - all I had to do was update my profile. Hopefully, you should be able to contact me now, and I can gladly pass on what information I have. Naxosmusiclibrary.com is a great site and has everything there you might want to hear. It's not exhaustive, but it includes all Naxos and some Chandos label recordings. It's a great reference tool and I can justify passing information on for pedagogical reasons.
Malcolm Messiter is another interesting player. I've sat next to him on just one occasion, and it was a complete hoot! So many of our better players are often absolute characters. He was one of my heroes when I was younger. He was known as 'the man with the golden oboe' for obvious reasons, and as an oblique reference to James Galway, in that he was deemed a showman on the oboe. He's very much into writing software programmes and such, having made his fortune through his own private business. He still finds time, however, to play oboe and can be heard from time to time playing concertos. His recording of the Vaughan Williams oboe concerto is surely one of the best interpretations about. He doesn't fall into the trap of treating V. Williams as nostalgic, pastoral whimsy, which then really brings alive the 2nd and 3rd movements of the concerto.
Maybe you'll be surprised to hear that I donated the clips for Joseph Robinson, Pamela Pecha, Humbert Lucarelli and the Alex Klein Krommer, too. I have quite a few american oboists' cds. It pays to broaden ones horizons to get different angles on how to play, or interpret our repertoire.
Anyway, I have been putting off the evil task of 'reed making' as long as I can, but must now get on and, hopefully, scrape a few winners before Monday.
All the best, James
