Bobo
I completely forgot about the oboe sound gallery, which is ironic, as I was in discussions with Thomas Nissen several years ago about his idea of creating this gallery, and consequently sent him at least 20 clips for about 15 players from that list - including the Doherty! You're right, the Martinu is not her best. I think it may have been her debut cd and she was trying to be over-expressive, consequently, becoming a bit bleat-y. It's difficult to know which of the three cds to suggest buying, but the Ross Edwards must be the cheapest, (though very good), and the 'Sublime' compilation cd is full of all our best slow tunes. Equally, the Blues for D.D. cd is her most virtuosic and contains major repertoire pieces. You know how this works - one cd of someone can never give you a full picture of how they truly play.
As one of the teachers at the RSAMD in Glasgow I am privy to several of the colleges' usernames and passwords for naxosmusiclibrary.com which allows all the students and staff complete listening access online to everyone of that site's cds, including some of Ms. Doherty's. I'd happily give it to you to use but this forum is too public for that information. I can't work out if there are ways of contacting people here privately. If interested let me know and we might be able to work something out.
Regarding Robin Williams, again I am guilty for donating that clip to the gallery. He's the principal oboe of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. I was on trial for both the SCO and the BBC SSO at the same time about 12 years ago. He has an incredible double-tongue facility. One of my trial weeks with the SCO was Gluck's Dance of the Furies, which has about 4 or 5 lines of double-tongueing for the two oboes in unison with the strings. I found it quite tiring, but he seemed to find it quite easy. Draw your own conclusions! Anyway, I have two days left of reed scraping before flying to China. I'd rather not have to do any while over there if I can help it.
Regards
James
