Hi everyone,

I just completed the experiment. I shaped and tied three pieces of cane, thinning the ends from the inside not the outside. Thanks to Mike for the challenge!

I actually used a bevel reed knife to slice away the cane from the bark, and it worked a treat. Be VERY careful as you do this...

All three tied on beautifully. One began to split as I rolled my three wraps up to the end of the staple, but the split stayed below the wraps. I continued wrapping normally, and everything was fine.

I'm a leftie, so if the wraps and overlap seem strange to you - they are.

I close the top of my folded and shaped piece of cane tightly with cling-film to keep the ends together. The resulting "dolly" just seems to center itself on the staple.

Weber synthetic staples, 47 mm
Variagated FF nylon thread
Howarth #1 shaper (equivalent to RDG #1, I was told),
Fold level with tops of ears (thanks, John)
Ends thinned from inside, ~3 mm (thanks, Mike)
Tie on at 74.5 mm
Length of blank after initial scrape and clip ~73 mm
