I rarely have trouble with such cracking, although I do not try to tie as long as 75 mm. Instead of scraping or slicing vertically I just use a coarse fingernail emery board from any drugstore, and sand off the bark from the lower 3 or so mm. of the cane. Its easy to taper it from bark down to very thin (and flexible) at the lower end of cane. Lay emery board on edge of desk and rub lower few mm cane over the emery, bark side down. Use greater finger pressure toward the lower end , to get a nice tapered thickness. It then closes easier and shapes to the shaft. Its quicker and I think easier to control than using knife, also does not dull your knife . Lois Barton
