Howard, please excuse this sidebar - I have some questions for johnt:
"Just for info, David Weber, reed maker extraordinaire & purveyor of some of the finest cane out there (Grimaud), recommends this tie length for his 1B shaper tip. I've tried it & it works to perfection."
As a matter of fact, I am currently using cane shaped on a 1B shaper tip (bought shaped, from a really reliable source), and brand-new Weber staples. I tie at 72.5-73 mm, and the overlap this gives is minuscule. I'll try 75 just as an experiment, but there is simply no way this cane will seal at 75. I expect that the sides will gape at this length, not simply fail to seal.
This gives rise to several options:
1. There are variations in the 1B shaper tip - I am going to discount this immediately, since David Weber has built up a superb reputation as a supremely reliable source of cane and equipment.
2. It is perhaps possible to shape "aggressively" on a shaper tip, causing the overall dimensions of the shaped cane to be narrower for one person than for another - while this is an option, I suspect that such differences would not produce a 2 mm difference in tie-on length.
3. You shape your cane with the hinge level with the top of the ears, and not pushed down to the blade of the shaper - this could cause a ~1.5 mm difference in tie-length. Is this how you shape your cane?
