Last night, i searched through the database of the Bboard for information regarding the prevention of cracking while tying, what i found was very valuable, but did not help my current situation, thus my posting. It's very frustrating, i do not know why, but recently my percentage of cracks from the thread while tying has been very high. What are the possible factors that are causing this?
Here is my typical procedure, to see if something is wrong method wise:
1. Cane is soaked until it sinks to the bottom of the bowl. Usually takes less than an hour. I do not use hot water.
2. I tie beginning from 4 circles before the staple end.
3. I use E8 from Henze and D12 Klopfer staples. I have their respective mandrels.
4. I thin 4-5mm of the ending of the piece of folded cane. (I take off quite a lot of cane from this area.) Using a cutter i slice 6 lines, creating 3 small "X" shapes, to prevent cracking still.
5. For the previous 3 times of batch tying, of 2 times my cane has been shaped and tied directly.
6. I try to tie 75mm blank length, if they dont close enough at the sides i push the cane down to 74. Finished reed length 72.
Can't think of what else i do. Any ideas?
Regards,
Howard
