Well, I'd say that is a dandy way to wind. Just so long as you give the cane alignment one last check before the winding down, I would say you are on solid ground. I would advocate using a caliper to measure from the bottom of the staple to the last wind at the top (before the cinching up tight) & commencing to wind down toward the cork. You never want to go above the top of the staple (oval) Another thing is that you can eliminate the tapering of the cane ends. Jay Light says to unless you just want to do it for cosmetic reasons. And water almost to the boiling point? Hot tap water will do just fine; by the time you get from the tap to your reed table & put cane in the water, the temperature will be optimum for soaking. Too hot & you tend to alter too much the composition of cane chemistry. A 20-25 minute soak should be all that is necessary in warm water for the cane to sink like a rock. My 2¢
