Another thing about cracking--I recently had a lot of reeds cracking while scraping. I checked whether these cracks occurred in the same place that the reed cracked below the tie (I never worry about the cane cracking below the tie). In no cases were the cracks along the same line above and below the tie. I think this suggests that cracks below the tie don't really hurt the reed itself, as the crack doesn't propagate above the tie.

Of course, I tie my reeds funny, too. I don't crossover, I just start right at the end of the staple with a right-over-left loop (staple to the left) and wrap on down the staple.
