I'm not sure what the six small X's are for, but I suggest that when you pull the first 3 or 4 loops tight before you crossover that:
a) Make sure that you're not going past the end of the staple. I always make sure that I can still see the end of the staple before pulling the string tight and that there is enough bees' wax on the string so that it won't slip past th end as I'm pulling it tight.
b) When you pull the string tight, do it *very* slowly. This will reduce frequency of cracking.
