... hmm ... yes, both rolling & slip-slide work for every-day use of half hole held in down position for top notes ... and minimalist rolling technique with wrist rotation is definitely more reliable when fingers are sweaty or keys are sticky to the touch (unless wrist itself is aching)
... but ... there are other options for the half-hole too, which can't be done by rolling, such as
... split second finger lift to fully open then close down half hole to encourage rapid octave drops (since that technique works, it's not a crime to lift the half-hole like any other key for basic fingering either)
... on thumb-plate oboes, there are some other Alt fingerings, trills, overblown notes and harmonics enabled by half-hole position variations, including the minimalist technique of covering the hole in the cap, but lifting the cap fully open
... and on conservatory oboes, depending on each oboe's temperament, half hole can variably be rolled open or lifted fully open for better high harmonics
... so rolling is only one of the fingering options for the half-hole, even if it comes more highly recommended for basic use ...
