I really agree with your 3rd paragraph here. Someone once put it to me as "Technique is a means to an end, but the end is not technique. Technique only allows the playing to be effortless so you can concentrate on musicality" which is some of the best advice that I've ever been given.

I also completely agree with the "practice it ridiculously slow" advice. It's amazing how much it will pay off in the long run. Master it once, and then you'll rarely have to do it again. It's far more satisfying than playing it the wrong way over and over (I think we all need to take our own advice on that one more often!).
