Hello -
Just a tangential comment that the testing method described by huboboe, jhoyla, and oboelips is better described as "single-blind," not "double-blind." Double-blind would imply that the oboist also did not know which instrument she/he was playing. Analogously, in a double-blind medication trial, neither the patient nor the evaluator knows what drug is being administered.
I imagine it would be challenging to do a double-blind oboe trial, though perhaps not for identical models (e.g. one Rigoutat Evolution vs. another Rigoutat Evolution). The rationale for double-blinding is that the player herself might play differently (use different embouchure, breath, etc.), perhaps without even realizing it.
The funniest commentary that I have ever read on blinded comparisons pertained to bicycles. Never attempt a blinded comparison of the speed/comfort/handling of 2 bicycles - could be very hazardous.
