Hello Everyone,
I am currently trying used oboes, one to be purchased next week. Yesterday morning when I woke up I was sure I had my choice, although I still have not tried Howarth oboes yet. I went to the high school auditorium (rented) where I was performing in a community theatre version of Les Miserables. Originally I was going to play the Oboe (Reed 2) chair, but got relegated to Reed 1 (Flute, Picc, Alto, Clarinet) through a series of events. Yesterday was our last performance, and I brought in my choice oboe and reeds to try along side the oboe player's at the concert. I played both instruments, and to my poor emotions I liked her oboe better. Her's seemed to have a ring in the sound where mine sounded dull and almost stuffy. I am completely shaken at this point, and I'm trying to come to grips with the experience. When I played my oboe before, I thought it was dark, but maybe it's too dark, so much so that it lacks a brilliance/luster in quality needed for solo work. The instrument would blend quite nicely with anything, because it is decidedly not reedy at all. I like the intonation and evenness of timbre. Maybe it's just a point of making reeds for the instrument that will add brilliance, and the "darkness" of the sound is an advantage, especially in my line of work in the musical theatre realm.
