I recently brought both of my instruments to the most discerning listeners I know - my regular wind quintet.
I had them both in front of me. One is my lovely, 5 year old Loree C model. The other, my faithful 36 year old Strasser/Marigaux. The Loree has a full, rich sound, while the other has a lighter, sweeter tone. I demonstrated them both - they liked the sound of both, and could definitely hear the difference. During the rest of our practice I would occasionally ask them if they could tell which one I was playing, or if they could even hear the difference.
The answer was a resounding "no" - I was me playing the oboe, a sound and style they certainly recognized and enjoyed, but they could not tell which instrument was which.
once you have whittled out instruments that simply don't play properly - intonation, responsiveness, rocky joints, unergonomic keywork etc. - you should ask yourself which instrument feels like a natural extension of you. Which feels the most expressive, the most like Drew. Take a romantic work and go wild. Take a baroque piece and play with precise delicacy. Which instrument says "I'm yours"?
