Actually, I now suspect the staples I recommended from Singin Dog reeds ARE the Stevens Plain brass and Plain Silver with the spiral score. Yes, I use Stevens #2 staples as well, generally the thinwall brass but not necessarily the "Pro" model which has a polished outside, and is $1 more. Nothing different acoustically on the inside.
I've been following this thread and it seems to me that right now, you're juggling so many variables such as cane, gouge, staples, and instruments, it's probably too confusing and complicated to really sort out which is having what effect. I'd suggest you stick with whatever staple/gouge/cane you're using for your current reeds. Get to know the Marigaux's really well, and then after several months, re-evaluate your equipment.
The more I learn from my professor, Martin Schuring, the more I am realizing that he doesn't care what the name on anything he's using is, as long as IT WORKS. That doesn't mean he's looking for the perfect staple, gouge, shape, oboe, etc, but something that will just work well enough for his playing. If your staples and reeds are working now as they are with the instrument, stick with them until you've figured out the Marigaux.
That's my two cents.
