Mark, you should try Stevens staples. I began playing on Pisoni & switched over to Stevens & felt I got a much better, more lush, cushion-y sound. I also tried the Singin' Dog brass staples on Cooper's recommendation. They tend to give a straight up sound, like a shot of Glenfiddich, neat. There you go. I think your wife's coffee image is nifty. Coloration is much of what the oboe is all about, I trow. I favor the Stevens product. So very consistent, with those wonderful raised spirals, which keep the cane from twisting on the staple as you tie. Also, Julieanne & David Stevens are delightful people. We oboe folk need to support such.
