Drew,
Even before I was in the market for a new oboe - I always avoided the terms "dark" or "bright" to describe an Oboe sound. I preferred to use words such as complex, resonant, warm, ringing, etc.............. I don't feel that the words dark or bright really communicate the integration of the Oboe sound.
I pressed my wife (who is not musician and not musically inclined) to further describe her experience with the Marigaux and the Loree sounds.
She stated the Loree tone had an edge as the sounds reaches you. She feels the sound hits you and then fall off sharply as on a step; in comparison she described the experience of the Marigaux sound coming at her as a series of undulating waves that hits you and then slowly dissipates.
I can see how both approaches to sound projection have their place - especially depending on the style of music and personal taste.
Both are full of sound; however, communicating something different.
After playing a Loree for 12 years - I must admit it is difficult making the leap. Although, the Marigaux is a beautiful instrument that has a warm resonant full tone and a delightful buoyancy to the sound - I have to ask myself - is this an infatuation with an alluring beautiful woman or will it be a life long love affair?
There is a solution though to the dilemma- that is to have both! And enjoy each instruments charms. Whereas, I was considering selling my Loree - I might keep it for a while ...................... or maybe even look for another instrument -
This is really a fascinating process ................. Why not have more than one Oboe - maybe two .......................... or possibly three!?!?!?!
