I think the issue of blades cracking comes down to too much downward pressure being excerted as someone previously has mentioned.
I am not really sure what is meant by the term "reed killers" as it pertains to flat metal plaques. I would be really hard pressed to blame a reed not turning out on the flat metal plaque. All of the reeds that I have made that never turned out have been because of warped cane, asymetrical gouge, faulty shaping, poor winding, deteriorated cane quality and most importantly a dull-I'll say it again-dull knife. I think a dull knife is the number one reason why a reed never had a chance to come to it's full potential. If you have a very sharp knife as everyone knows you can apply less pressure to the reed when you are scraping so you don't crush the blades flat. I have used the contoured plaques and I got rid of them. If your blades don't want to grip the plaque the normal inclination is to push the plaque further towards the tube thus pushing the blades further open and warping the opening. Also, as someone mentioned you can't adequately tell what areas of the reed are thinner than others.
