This is an older post, but I figured I'd bring it back up anyways...
Usually SuzyQ, when I scrape a reed, I remove all the bark where it will be removed from later. In other words, I scrape channels 3mm from the string, all the way to the end of the tip.
This has two advantages:
-It takes away some of the tension that's put on the wood
-It's easier to get the blend going.
Usually when I scrape the channels I remove enough cane so that I can see the grain of the wood.
I prefer to remove a lot of wood while it's still a blank, as this helps the opening relax, and not get too big, when actually clipped open. It also seems to get the reed going faster.
Having that said, you still have to keep the back thicker than the heart at this point; make sure that the reed is still a "wedge". (i.e. don't define anything yet)
Hopefully that helps your reed cracking problems!
