1. Make sure you are providing some support behind the reed while you scrape.
2. I imagine the suggestions already made will help eliminate this problem -- especially those which stress that you take at least some cane out of the back as part of your initial scrape.
3. My hunch is that knife sharpness is a major issue for you. Really make sure it's sharp and resign yourself to frequent resharpening. It's very difficult to exert the kind of force necessary to crack a reed when using a sharp reed knife.
