I agree with Widereed. Flat plaques should be banned. Bad for the reed, bad for the knife. The reed is best worked on when supported according to its natural arc geometry. Pressing it against a flat surface just stresses the cane.
One thought: can the problem of cracking reeds (seems to be a bigger problem in the US than in Europe) partly be due to the widespread use of metal plaques?
