The cane always split in the same place....just to the right of center.
I was taught to work on the tip first, thinning it until it would crow, before proceeding to scraping the back. Everytime, just as I would think the tip was thin enough, the reed would split. So I assume I was putting too much pressure somewhere.
I'm wondering if it would be better for me to do the back first? Or is that not a good idea?
I have a book by Jay Light, and he suggests finishing the tip before scraping the back.
My shaped/gouged/folded cane came in the mail today, along with the other reedmaking supplies I ordered. I'm anxious to get started, but I'm hesitant at the same time because I don't want to keep ruining the reeds.
