As a begginner reedmaker myself, I had the same splitting problem, I'm just starting to get the hang of the light pressure required (as well as endless patience) so as not to split them. But while you're experimenting there is one thing that my instructor told me that might help you: she said that basically you have to make a waste paper basket full (and I mean Crammed full) of reeds before you get any good ones at all. I always keep this in mind when making reeds and it helps amazingly heh....I now have two reeds that actually play half...well....maybe a quarter decently..yay! and I've lost count of how many I've made.
cheers
Beth
O little bard, is you lot so hard,
If men neglect your pages?
I think not much of yours or of mine,
I hear the roll of the ages.
