Dear SuzyQ's Mom,
I think rgombine has probably hit the nail on the head. The cracking is mainly the result of bearing down too hard on the cane, and bearing down too hard on the cane is the result of your knife's not being sharp enough.
The difference in the quality of reeds made with a sharp knife and those made with a not-so-sharp knife is unbelievable.
Knife sharpening is almost an art in itself. You ( everyone, in fact) would be wise to get a book on knife sharpening. In the mean time, the "crock sticks" are a good way to get a sharp edge on a double hollow-ground knife, without possesing great skill. Just be sure to keep the knife blade straight up and down when using them; don't tilt the blade in towards the crock sticks, or you will be ruining your knife blade. "Robbing Peter to pay Paul", as my teacher at Oberlin used to say.
You can often find the "crock sticks" at a local knife or kitchen wares shop.
