oboeidaho,

what kind of humidifier do you use? i have both a dampit and a humistat (small vial that you fill with water), but haven't used them yet for the new oboe since the weather's been so humid (the dampit comes with a handy cardboard hygrometer that changes color and shows when it's getting too dry). I definitely plan on using them when the weather turns...it gets crazy dry in the winter with the heating systems turned too high etc. when the bell ring is easy to rotate on the wood, that's a definite sign!

"Blow Out" isn't the wood getting tired, it's the wood warping and changing form from it's original form due to years of contracting and swelling in response to moisture absorption and drying...what some of these guys are saying is that it's an oversold phenomenon that's been used to mask a host of other harder to detect ills; certainly careful care of an instrument should add years to it.
