<<are you talking about not using my tongue to start the tone at all? >>

No, you have to use the tongue to release the air (and sometimes to stop it, as in the case of a hard staccato).

When my teacher talks about "release," she means to describe what happens when you remove your tongue from the reed at a point where the air is already up and running at whatever level you need it to be to create the tone.

She has me think of "releasing" the tongue after the air is already there, because I was releasing the tongue, and simultaneously giving a burst of air, which results in the abrupt or "pecky" attack we're trying to avoid. The air must be continuous, and the tongue just interrupts it to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the articulation required. Legato tongue=less interruption of the air; staccato tongue=more interruption of the air -- and all points in between.

The easiest way to get the "feel" of this, for me, was by doing descending quarter note scales first totally slurred, then while still blowing as if it were a slurred line, tongue each quarter note with the least tongue interruption possible, and then work the tongue from that point into other articulations -- but still keep the air like slurred air. It feels really good, once you get it going.

S.
