My teacher uses water and that's it! I don't know if using any other solvent is necessary, but water is perfect, and i experience the same:

"i'm always amazed at how much gross gunk is swimming around in the vial after i've left a reed in there for a while" sensation.

Haha....But i will take Bob's advise to try that solution, i think prior to this my teacher probably had no idea too. But i would think that it is best to hold the reed upside down in the water, dunking it in and out as opposed to leaving the whole thing in. I think so because although the water moves, the dirt itself requires some other form of movement to 'swim' away from the reed. And it would be terribly disgusting to know that the reed has been in a bucket of bacteria water, eewww!!!

K Ge's original shapers are wider than usual and are very free blowing but at first glance the reed will have a terribly wide opening (which happens to most of his reeds), and takes a bit of time to break in. The narrow shaper is just for players who tend to prefer playing at the very tip, and who wants less 'biting' (i hate this word!). I have never played on their short staples, but it's just that, shorter staples! I would go on to suggest to just get their most usual specifications, which vibrates terribly well. But like all reed makers, it can sometimes be inconsistent, and since i have started making my own, i have stopped using them. Good luck in your buy!
