Hi Dutchy --

In my experience (and apparently yours [wink]), you do get different gradations of tone with different reeds. Echoing what Chris P has said, I would not interpret one tone or another as being right or wrong -- it just is different.

I think Craig touched on this point in his post about the differences in sound you can make by holding your instrument this way or that. For my money, there are times when you might want to have a more projecting sound, or a more blending sound; a brighter sound or a warmer sound; a louder sound or a softer sound. The trick is to decide what aspect of the oboe sound you want to emphasize in any particular playing situation.

For example, when I have a solo passage with the concert band, I am probably going to want a reed that will, when asked to, hold its own with the trumpets and horns or whatever else I might be interacting with. That means a reed with a "harder" edge. On the other hand, when I am playing in my quintet, I will probably want a reed that allows me to blend effortlessly with the flutist (LOTS of flute/oboe duetting in quintet music). That means a reed with a softer-edged tone and dead-on pitch.

On the other hand, if I am doing a recital with a pianist, I might want a sturdy reed that shows off the rich color of the oboe as a solo instrument. Or I might want a very responsive and flexible reed that will allow me to play the various baroque allegro movements with ease. I would in fact change reeds between pieces to match these tonal/articulation needs.

You as the player can manipulate your equipment in one direction or another, as the circumstances require -- and that includes choosing the right reed for the occasion.
