<<i'm always amazed at how much gross gunk is swimming around in the vial after i've left a reed in there for a while and i ALWAYS brush, floss and rinse before playing so something is accummulating in there (and i don't want to know what it is).>>
My teacher got into this with me yesterday. She says that what happens is that a certain type of bacteria forms in the vascular bundles of the cane of a used reed, and that these bacteria thrive on saliva (oh, goody!). Over time, the bacteria break down the reed.
She didn't mention anything about cleaning reeds, though. I guess if you are making your own, and are good at it, you would just go ahead and make some new ones, rather than fuss around with the old ones. But I'll bet each of us has some old ones that would definitely be worth saving!
