Re: Moved up to better reeds, now oboe sounds like flute and/or clarinet. Normal?

Be careful not to let a stiffer reed cause you to bite or play with more reed in your face. Both will muffle the vibrations, and the sound will do some of the things you describe.

With stiffer reeds (and I don't mean popsicle sticks...) you will be able to do some more advanced oboe stuff if you are careful about the habits you develop now.

Try long tones and scales, concentrate on not biting and really support the air column.

Move air, lots of it (relative to what flabby beginner reeds require), breath low (your belly should poke out when you breath in, although our vanity does not like this).

To train that muscular movement, lie on the floor on you back, place a failrly heavy book on your stomach and breath in and out lifing the book with each intake of breath.

Hopefully, you work with a teacher and I don't want to interfere with your lesson plan, but consider not playing very softly for a few days as you adjust and adapt to the increased demand for breath support. Playing mf -ff with a 'open embouchure' will help out.

I am only talking about a few days. Perhaps no literature, just long tones and scales. Stop if fatigued, rest a while and continue. To really isolate the abdominal support, get a couple balloons and blow them up slowly
( careful.. just a couple at a time and repeat a few times a day.) Do that with the book on your stomach on your back as well.

When you husband or kids ask what the h... you are doing, say "isn't it obvious, I am practicing the oboe!"

Once these couple basic embouchure and air support things are on track, getting back to the tunes will be gratifying.
