Re: Moved up to better reeds, now oboe sounds like flute and/or clarinet. Normal?

Dutchy --

I just listened to all three of your excerpts, and what I observe is that, to my ears, you are producing significantly better tone with the Cassell reed than the other two. By "better," I mean to say that it is a more balanced sound with less nasally overtone. And it is very "oboey". It is really quite a nice tone.

I read in Daniel Levitin's tome, "This is Your Brain On Music" that it is the actually the tonal release (a.k.a. "attack," but my teacher doesn't like that word, because it implies more force than she wants to hear) of an instrument that gives what we hear as the characteristic sound of that instrument. Apropos of that, what I notice in all of your excerpts is that the initial "attack" is quite abrupt -- it goes from zero to 90 in a millisecond. This is something my teacher has had me work on and work on and work on, so that instead of an abrupt start to the tone, I have learned to ease it in. I'm thinking that this is what is bothering you when you listen to your sound -- as I said before, to my ears, the sound itself is quite decent.

Since you just had the embouchure epiphany (which is right on, by the way), you probably haven't had a chance to develop any sort of control in the initiation of tones with the more relaxed mouth -- it's done with the air, just sort of oozing it into the reed. Some folks talk about using the air as if you were squeezing toothpaste out of the tube as a metaphor for this -- and I have heard other, less attractive, analogies. This is where the responsiveness of the reed really matters. You want something that will speak easily, so you don't have to build up such force before you release.

Yeah, finding a GOOD teacher might be your next step.

Susan
