Just to add another opinion, my teacher has said to me (in a tone that one uses when talking to elementary-school students), "We SLIDE the finger, don't we. We don't ROCK the finger. We SLIDE the finger."

Of course.

As usual with oboe-related matters, there seems to be more than one school of thought about this.

Would anyone care to hold forth on the merits of either style? WHY would we want to rock or slide? What benefit adheres to one or the other? What is the perceived detriment of one or the other?
