Re: Rocking versus sliding the half hole

I am a clarinet player and started playing the oboe about a year ago. When I was first beginning to play, I had a lot of trouble sliding my left index finger because it was so different from what I was used to (rolling up to play A on clarinet), but after practicing by watching myself in a mirror for a few weeks it became much more natural. Since then I've found that I have fewer problems with half-hole notes, but this might just be because I'm getting better as a oboist in general. I suppose that everyone should just do what works for them, but if you have a teacher or professor telling you to stick with one method, it's probably better to follow their advice. After all, you are paying them for their expertise.
