Heh. I had to go upstairs and get 2/3 of the oboe out of the case, and sit there on the bed and pretend to play a D, because I couldn't visualize it here at the computer. It's one of those things like brushing your hair, that you know how to do but you can't explain or describe.
Anyway, apparently I rock. It just seems like a more instinctive thing to do, and sliding seems to take noticeably longer to get my finger off the hole. Also, there's a convenient little metal platform right there attached to the D key, which seems tailor-made to let the side of my finger rest there after rocking back.
All in all, it just seems like rocking works better for me. And I remember reading the cautionary "Slide, don't rock" in an instruction book somewhere, but at some point in the last 18 months I apparently automatically started rocking, because it feels right, somehow, whereas attempting to slide feels time-consuming.
