I rock, and when I need to go down one octave from d or c# I keep the finger raised over the key and bring it down.

Antal Dorati wrote five pieces pieces for Oboe solo, the first of which is called "La Cigale et la fourmie (d'après Lafontaine)" Allegro
"The Grass Hopper and the Ant". It involves so much use of the half hole we're talking about that it's worthwhile to try and play it and see whether rocking or sliding is best. My guess: rolling.

The Piece itself is a delight, if you got the fingers and flexibility for it.
